Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease characterised by high levels of glucose in the blood. High levels of glucose in the blood is deleterious to vital organs such as eyes, heart and kidneys. The aim of conventional treatment for diabetes is to control the blood glucose levels and prevent complications due to diabetes.
Metabolic surgery is an effective alternative to treat type-2 diabetes when other conventional treatments are not successful in controlling it. It includes various bariatric surgical procedures that have been clinically proven to cure type-2 diabetes in both obese and non-obese patients. Apart from their effect on diabetes, they also improve metabolic conditions such as hyperlipidaemia and hypertension in these patients. These metabolic effects of metabolic surgery are not due to decreased calorie intake or drastic weight loss, but due to some endocrine effect on the body because of surgical manipulation of the gastro-intestinal tract.
